Visualising data for the story of soy

Data storytelling and visualisation for Culture Hack Labs, making the scale and politics of industrial soy production legible and actionable

Culture Hack Labs is a not-for-profit consultancy supporting movements, organisations and activists to shift the cultural narratives that underpin ecological breakdown, extractivism and inequality.

This project was produced as part of their Territories of Transition series, an inquiry into how we evolve culture beyond the construct of land ownership to recalibrate our relationship to that which sustains us. Industrial soy production is one of the most significant drivers of global deforestation, yet the scale of its impact and the financial interests sustaining it remain largely invisible to those consuming its downstream products. We collaborated with Culture Hack Labs on data storytelling and visualisation, translating a complex web of agricultural, financial and ecological data into a narrative that could be read, felt and acted on. The piece traces the full story from the land cleared for soy cultivation, to the livestock it feeds, to the banks and financial institutions funding the destruction at scale. View the project here.
