KWANTU CHOIR

STORYTELLING THROUGH MUSIC VIDEOS

2021

THE CONCEPT

Kepa, the director of the Kwantu Choir, had a vision of a story to be told through the sounds and scenes of videos performed by the choir in and around Makhanda. The videos

thematically follow the story of a young woman’s reawakening into a life that she

can celebrate, after having been guided out of a dark place by her ancestors.

The Kwantu Choir are a community choir in Makhanda, South Africa that are ‘diverse, driven and determined’.

The videos were commissioned by the National Arts Festival and funded by the National Arts Council of South Africa.

THE FILMING

The videos were filmed in Makhanda, with pre-production and post-production conducted in Cape Town. The OCTOPI team were brought on to taking the creative vision, and turning it into a final product.

Through many Zoom calls and voice notes, we found a way to take a big idea, and make it possible in a tight timeline. Our team handled pre-production, videography, and the edits of the videos.

The videos haven’t been released yet… but whilst you wait, here is a behind the scenes from the last day of production that makes us smile every time we watch it!
