As a lover of local artisans, I was delighted to support two of my favourite Cape Town-based musicians. I had the challenge of capturing the emotions and visions of their work through a single artist illustration.
“Orah & The Kites are an alternative indie/folk band based in Cape Town. Their soundscape is forever evolving but is rooted in an appreciation for vocal harmony and the meditative cathartics of melody repetition. Lyrically the band is inspired by the wide spectrum of human emotions and our ability to feel so much and sometimes nothing at all.”
Below is my illustration for their song ‘LUCID’.
A visual poster about being trapped in a repetitive cycle of your own sadness and frustration. Knowing that no matter how hard you push back, fight and prevent it, it will win almost every time.
The ball is what moves the viewer through the artwork, conveying the uncertain yet playful aspect. Similar to the game of pinball; where you have a few tools to prolong the inevitable.
There is no winning and you can’t exit. It’s about surrendering to that and letting the melancholy run its course in the body. It’s an abstract representation of a heartbroken mind; a pinball machine of the mind.

The artwork depicts two people walking together in their stride, connected through nature and exploring the world’s map and contours of their relationship. Using a collage-styled design, the main theme is balance.
These elements come together to communicate the feeling of genuine human connection – arguably one of the most beautiful pleasures of life.
